I would love to say we were up bright and early, ready to explore but we certainly weren’t. We woke to our alarms at about 8:30 after a very late night, although the excitement of being in Italy really helped drag us out of bed considering we were still incredible tired.
I’m sure Connors host mum, Marina, spent the morning pacing outside our room as she was very excited when we were finally awake. We said hello to Nonna Italia, who stayed at the house last night but was sleeping when we arrived – again, so nice to see her excitement over Connors arrival.
We all enjoyed multiple espressos and some granola on the terrace of their house, as we enjoyed the beautiful view of Naples below.
By about 11am we had decided we’d head into town to explore a little, work out a sim card and of course, indulge in some pizza for lunch!! We set off on our way, getting the bus into town and decided to tick the sim card off the list first. Fortunately the mobile plans are very cheap here however unfortunately they pop a whooping 20 euro ‘activation fee’ on it for foreigners!! We managed to get an ‘ok’ deal, costing about $30AUD per month but with an insane amount of internet.
After sorting out our sim, we visited a couple of shops around the Vermoro area and then slowly made our way to Pizza. We booked a restaurant through the fork which gave us 50% off all pizzas (!!!), and while we could have gotten a Margarita for less than $5 aud, we decided to go all oout for our first pizzas. We shared two different pizzas, a Diavola which was spicy salami and cheese, as well as a white base pizza with sausage and potato. Both were delicious and it was everything we’d been imagining over the last couple of weeks!
After lunch we were collected by Connors friend, Antonio, who kindly drove us to the ‘Historico Centre’. The Historico Centre is basically the old part of Naples which has now become a very touristy area. Not only does it have the beautiful churches, palaces and theatres, the streets have become lined with pizza shops, spritz bars and souvenir shops.
Antonio took us around the Historic Centre for about 4 hours, where we wandered the streets looking at Maradona memoirs, many beautiful churches and classic Italian sights. Naples recently won the Soccer Championship so not only are the locals still basking in the win but the streets are quite literally lined with blue and white. There is scarves hanging from electricity lines, streamers hanging between buildings and most shops sporting a huge Napoli sign. The win was back in September however the excitement continues.
We clocked up about 20,000 steps before deciding to head home for a one hour nap and then head back out later. I’m not sure that we actually ended up falling asleep, despite our exhaustion, but even just laying down to shut our eyes for an hour was exactly what we needed.
Feeling slightly more recharged, we headed back out with Antonio at about 7pm to have a couple of drinks at a bar. He took us to a ‘locals’ spot which turned out to be a beautiful beach club, right on the water. I tried my first Lemonchello Spritz before quickly returning to Coke, while Connor and Antonio opted for a couple of beers. By about 9pm, not only were we tired again but the hunger had also started to set in. We decided to detour past a place Antonio had highly recommended on our way home and my goodness, it did not disappoint. You know it’s a great, local Italian restaurant when you cant hear any English in the line waiting for a table!! Connor grabbed a Ragu pasta, which is local to the Napolitan area, while I went for the Carbonara, my favourite kind of pasta. Neither pasta disappointed – they were incredible. Connor’s ragu was so rich in flavour, like nothing we’ve tasted before, while my Carbonara was traditional and equally as flavoursome.
While we were exhausted from the day, it was a great way to get us onto ‘Italian’ time, which is renowned for 2:30pm lunch and 9pm dinner!! We got back to the house by about 10:30pm and headed straight to bed but spent far too long discussing what a wonderful first day we’d had.
