Trip of a Lifetime

Another slow morning with no real plans for the day. We spent a bit of time doing some researching, trying to decide what we should make of today.
We eventually pulled ourselves out of bed and headed out for the day, of course first stop being Coffee. We continued our walk through Shinjuku and towards the Meiji Jungu Temple. The walk actually ended up being so much further than we thought, and we probably should have caught the train however the sun was shining so it was quite enjoyable.
Meiji Jingu Temple was beautiful, although not quite as impressive as the temples we’d seen recently in Kyoto. The gardens surrounding the Meiji Jingu Temple though were absolutely amazing. There wasn’t any amazing plants or anything but it was just so tranquil and enjoyable to walk around. While wandering around the temple we actually managed to see part of a Japanese wedding ceremony, which was very cool. I’m sure they have some very traditional rituals they participate in, but we saw them come out of a building and almost like parade through the temple while all the guards parted the crowds for them.
After we finished up there we decided to continue wandering onto Takeshita Street. We didn’t know much about this street, just that we’d read it was famous for its Anime shops. It was so ridiculously busy, we walked shoulder-to-shoulder with every other tourist for the whole length of the street, but it was quite cool.
We began to wander in the direction of Shibuya again, hoping to see the crossing in its true form but of course, not before stopping for lunch. Connor was really keen to find some Gyozas for lunch and so when we stumbled upon a cheap restaurant offering them, it was an easy decision. We sat down and enjoyed a soy sauce chicken and rice dish, as well as some pork Gyozas. As most Japanese food is, it was all very delicious and quite cheap.
We finally made it to the crossing and we were so happy to find no police around ushering people in certain directions. We crossed a couple of times and then headed up to the nearby Starbucks to get a bit of a birds eye view over it. I could have sat there all day, I just found it so fascinating but of course I’m sure the Starbucks workers wouldn’t be too impressed with that. We quickly moved on and headed into Shibuya area where we wandered around the shops for a little bit. Shibuya is apparently the area for shopping however with our bag slowly getting harder and harder to zip up, I mostly resisted from buying things.
By late afternoon our feet were exhausted and so we decided to head home for a chill out. We skype Connors brother and SIL for quite a while, catching up on everything they’ve been up to and attempting to fill them in on our adventures. By about 7:30pm, Connor declared his hunger and decided to go downstairs and grab us a kebab box while I finished up the blog. It was probably the worst kebab box we’ve ever had, but we should have expected that being in Japan and it was far nicer than dealing with the ridiculous crowds of Shinjuku.
After a few drinks in the room, we decided to head out and investigate the Golden Gai area which is just west of the Shinjuku area. Golden Gai is famous for its 5-8 person bars and my goodness, we were not prepared for how tiny these bars are. They quite literally fit 5-8 people all squished in together at one table!! We picked one that seemed to have some nice people in it as we were pretty certain conversation would be unavoidable in such a confined space. I grabbed a G+T while Connor stuck to the beers, and we both struck up some conversation with the Germans and South Africans who were also in this bar. We didn’t plan to have a big night as we had plans for the next day, and so the bars are quite strict about if you’re not buying drinks then get out. We enjoyed our drinks and decided to move on before they asked us too, although open to heading to another bar on the way home. The issue is with the small bars, they fill up sooo quickly and then there is a few that have only one or two people in them, and don’t look super appealing. We decided to head back to Shinjuku and find a Karaoke bar for a bit of a sing-a-long instead!
We didn’t quite manage to find a Karaoke bar but instead found a Dart bar! We enjoyed 3 games while sipping a few drinks, unfortunately Connor coming away as the winner.
By 10:30pm we decided to call it a night and attempt to get some sleep before an early morning and a very big day tomorrow.
