Trip of a Lifetime

Temperature: 21 | 34
We were up relatively early to get ready for todays snorkelling trip! We headed back to yesterday’s restaurant to grab ourselves a $1aud coffee each, praying that it wouldn’t upset our stomach and leave us busting for the toilet in the middle of the ocean!! Spoiler.. it didn’t, thankfully!

After we finished our coffees we headed to the snorkelling meeting point where we were given our fins, mask and snorkel, as well as a life jacket each. Eventually our boat arrived and the 6 of us pilled on, ready to enjoy the day. We were with two other couples, one from the Netherlands and another from France who had been travelling already for 6 months and they had a year left!

Our first stop was a nearby island where we saw a heap of beautiful fish and coral as well as hundreds of jellyfish and a stingray. The amount of fish we saw for the whole day was actually mind blowing, we often found ourselves in the middle of a school of fish, to the point where we could touch them and they didn’t even care. And the coral throughout the whole day was just amazing and not at all what I expected. I imagined being in Malaysia where they have a lot of issues with cleanliness etc that the coral would be quite damaged, but it certainly didn’t appear that way in these spots. We saw coral that was electric blue, purple, pink, fluorescent green – amazing.

Our second spot we saw the biggest jellyfish I’ve ever seen!! It was probably 50cm in diameter and had tentacles that would have been easily 2m long – so scary. We were told though that all the jellyfish here aren’t poisonous so if you get stung it will hurt, but its not life threatening at all.

Our third stop we stopped off at a little island where we pulled up into the beach. As soon as we got out, we spotted about 20 baby sharks just hanging out in the shallows. Again, we were told they’re not dangerous so of course we jumped in and had a snorkel with them. After a quick swim we retrieved some snacks from the boat and sat up on the very white sand to enjoy the view and gain back some energy!! I had forgotten how exhausting snorkelling can be!

Our fourth stop was back on the main island of Tioman however more northern than where we are currently staying. We stopped off there purely for lunch, so we headed off on a walk to see what we could find. We ended up stopping off at a restaurant that we heard a nearby person describe as ‘a bit pricier but beautiful food’, only to find that it most definitely was not ‘a bit pricier’ in our opinion. We grabbed a chilli chicken dish with a fried rice, as well as a noddle dish. The chilli chicken and fried rice was delicious although VERY spicy, but I actually didn’t enjoy the noodle dish at all so Connor downed that on behalf of us both. We wandered back to the boat to meet up with everyone else and head to the next stop.

Our fifth stop was just 5 minutes from our lunch spot and it was where we were expected to see turtles. Unfortunately we didn’t see any as the current was just so strong and the guide believes it would have been pushing them inland. We did however see some more sharks, lots more big jelly fish and also a squid! I was so excited about seeing a squid as ive never seen one alive – it was very cool.

After not seeing turtles at our last stop, our guide was determined to find some and so gave us an extra spot. Our sixth stop was just past the previous stop and within minutes of being in the water we spotted our first turtle! The excitement continued as we probably spotted about 6 in total at this trip, as well as more jelly fish, sharks and stingrays.

Our seventh spot was in Monkey Bay, which I’m sure you can tell by the name, is renowned for its monkeys. They don’t swim however we were there at the perfect time as they all started to come down from the jungle to the very shallow water to pick crabs for their dinner! So cool to see, although we were quite the distance from them. We then jumped out for our last snorkel where we saw plenty more beautiful coral, fish, stingrays, jellyfish and sharks.

We arrived back at ABC by about 5:15pm and oh my goodness, we were exhausted! We had showers and freshened ourselves up before lounging in the hammocks for a couple of hours. By about 7pm a huge storm began to roll in and so that was our que to go and get dinner. We headed next door to the accommodation where we shared a sweet and sour chicken and a fried rice. We majorly stuffed up this order as we ordered ‘Kampung Style’ fried rice which Connor had thought meant ‘spicy’ (based off something else he’d seen)…it actually means anchovies… So our fried rice came COVERED with anchovies (literally hundreds), which neither Connor or I like. Considering it was literally $2aud, we should have just ordered something else but it felt too wasteful. Instead we sat there for probably ten minutes picking out all the anchovies, which the neighbourhood cats loved! The meals turned out to be quite enjoyable after this and we were very satisfied.

Like I said, the storm had rolled in and we were feeling quite exhausted after a huge day and so we headed up to our room for another early night.
