We had a very slow morning although quickly decided to get up and dressed so we could leave our stinking hot room. While this accommodation has been great, having a 5 bed dorm to ourselves, the air conditioner is broken and the fan is pretty pathetic which has meant we have needed to be out of the room as soon as the sun is up.
We headed down to the beach and decided to get coffee and a snack at a nearby restaurant. We opted for an egg on toast each, and a coffee which was stupidly cheap and felt like we were ripping them off!
While we have been on Tioman Island, Connor has been constantly talking about wanting to do a jungle trek. Honestly, I could not think of anything worse. We saw a huge snake in a tree the other day and that set me off, there is no way in hell I was going to be walking through the home of snakes, spiders, and monkeys. No. Way. In. Hell.
He was adamant he would do it alone if I wasn’t going to join him (despite trying to convince me at every opportunity), which was honestly just as scary however after talking to a local who promised there was no deadly animals (just scary!!!), we figured it was probably safe enough. So Connor got himself organised and headed out. Here is his recount:
I left Grace to start my walk and as a safety measure told her that if I wasn’t back by 2:30pm then she was allowed to be worried. As I began my walk I was relieved to see a sign (in English) to mark the start of the trail meaning it was a common thing tourists do. I set off on the 10km (out and back) hike to Monkey bay. Along the route there were multiple steep sections where ropes were available to help pull myself up the slope. The final destination, Monkey bay, was beautiful but the most enjoyable part was seeing the wild monkeys in the forest along the way. I was having to be very careful as I approached them to ensure I didn’t scare them off! I sort of had to rush back as the hike took a bit longer than I thought as I stopped to watch the wildlife. I was back by 2pm and saw a breathe of relief from Grace that I’d returned safely and in one piece.
Back to business: I remained at the accommodation, sitting up on the deck with a beautiful beach view and completed my blog which I was again falling a little behind on. In the two hours that connor was gone, I managed to write, upload, and add photos for 5 days’ worth of my blog…yes two hours to do 5 days. I am very happy I will have this blog to look back on in years to come however it has been SO much more time consuming than I expected. Nonetheless, in about 30 days I will not have to write about my days anymore!
Once Connor returned we headed back to the restaurant we ate breakfast at and decided to order some lunch. We grabbed a curry noodle, chicken and rice and some fries to share before heading back to the deck to chill out for a bit.
In the late afternoon we got ourselves organised to head out for a snorkel, just off the beach we’re staying at, however the universe had other plans for us. As we stepped out onto the beach, the wind picked up and huge clouds came overhead. We headed out anyway although only lasted about 15 minutes as the waves began to thrash us around and the water became too murky to see anything anyway. We had a quick lay on the beach to dry off before heading up to the showers to freshen up.
By dinner time we decided to head to a pizza restaurant at the other end of where we were staying. It was about a 20 minute walk in darkness…do I need to remind you of how scared I am of the wildlife around here. It was a very anxious walk as I turned my phone flash light on whenever the street lights became insufficient, but we arrived eventually. Only to find the owner standing at the front saying: “tonight and tomorrow night closed”. Devastating. We took the anxious walk back with my trusty little flashlight, where we managed to find another local restaurant and decided to stop there. We ordered a curry noodle dish, a bowl of fries as well as a fried rice and chicken. We ended up only having a couple of mouthfuls of the curry noodle as we have had it a couple of times over the last couple of days and we were feeling a bit ‘off it’ – we thought we were ordering something different! But the rice and chicken was great, and of course you cant go wrong with a bowl of fries.
We took the rest of the dark walk home, finally arriving to our roasting hot room. We got ourselves ready for bed and called it a night, our final night on Tioman.
