Trip of a Lifetime

Up with the sun by 7am, ready to pack our bags and get on the road.
Our first stop was for the local McDonalds were we grabbed a coffee each and skyped our Mums for Mothers Day. We had a lovely couple of hours catching up with each family before heading to the carwash to clean up Maria. By about 1100am we were on our way back to Lisbon city to return Maria to her rightful owner. It was a pleasure seeing the coast of Portugal with Maria however we both breathed a sigh of relief upon returning her that there were no further injuries!!
Now that we no longer had our own transport, it was time to return to our usual public transport or our trusty feet. You know how there is some things you don’t tell your mum at all about your travels, and then there are some things you tell her after the fact… this is one she can know after the fact.
We ended up walking about 2km total to the metro, up and down hills, before we were forced into walking on the side of the freeway. While we could have easily gotten the bus, and in hindsight, probably should have, it started out as quite a ‘normal’ walk before we were forced onto the freeway. Maybe we could have turned around and chosen another route however we were already about 1.5km in, directly in the sun and honestly, you couldn’t have paid me to backtrack with the 15kg pack on my back. So we did what we had to and walked a short trek on the side of the freeway and made it out alive… no need to stress mum.
We eventually made it to our destination however still quite early, so decided to grab some lunch at McDonalds. We downed some nuggets and burgers before heading to the supermarket to grab cold meat and bread for dinner…no way we were paying airport prices on this tight budget!!
By about 3pm we had made it to the airport although extremely early for our 8pm flight, we decided it wasn’t worth the trip into Lisbon and back out again. Unfortunately our flight was then delayed until 9:30pm, so we were wayyy too early. We managed to kill plenty of time by binging Greys Anatomy, snacking on our dinner and getting great amusement out of people watching at the airport.
We finally boarded our plane about 10pm, arriving to Marrakech by 11:30pm. Unfortunately, despite our prior research, our drone was confiscated by customs upon arrival. Drones have been prohibited in Morocco since 2018 however there is a huge lack in information online, hence why we had no idea. Normally its not a huge deal, customs hold your drone while you holiday in Morocco, and then you collect it as you exit the country – assuming you enter and exit out of the same airport. Our situation was made difficult as we were entering and exiting out of different airports, meaning we had to somehow get the drone from Marrakesh to Fes. You would think considering this has been a rule for over 5 years, that there would be some sort of procedure for when this situation arrises, however there isn’t and they were stumped with ideas of what we could do. We were told we would need to change our flights to Turkey to ensure we left from Marrakesh, or we could organise a postage service to have the drone sent to Fes however they couldn’t guarantee when it would arrive. We obviously had no idea what to do however fortunately, they didn’t need an answer there and then. We decided to leave the airport considering it was well after midnight by now, and we’d reassess the situation with fresh eyes in the morning.
We met our pre-arranged taxi driver just outside the airport, who drove us to the edge of the medina nearby to our accommodation. Despite it being nearly 1am the streets of Marrakech were absolutely packed with locals and tourists.
We made it to our hotel and headed straight to bed, excited to see Marrakech in daylight.
