John and Selina's Drive Across Country

Busy weekend. We met Amanda's brother and family in Chinatown on Saturday. We had an excellent meal and visited a fortune cookie factory. Selina did a fine job making her way through very busy sidewalks.

After that we took a street car to The Castro, one of the first gay neighborhoods in the country. We saw an interesting exhibit on gay rights and the summer of love. That's the only summer of love 50th anniversary event we caught while in town.

On Sunday, Amanda and Selina went to St, Gregory's of Nyssa Episcopal Church in Potrero Hill, where they want you to "sing and dance to Jesus' lead." They really liked it. They tell me the music was great and the dancing was fun. Sorry, no pictures of that. Also, Selina says the body of Christ during communion tasted a lot like sourdough bread. That's a good thing. Right across the street from the church is the brewery where they make Anchor Steam. That's a pretty powerful street.

There was a prayer chalk board out in front of the church. Selina wrote on the board the name of a beloved college advisor, Karen Wold, who had helped her at Illinois. Selina found out a couple of days ago that Karen died.

While Selina and Amanda were at church, I did a walk/run to Haight-Ashbury, about three miles away. It's pretty gentrified these days, and a bit of a tourist trap, complete with a Ben & Jerry's on the corner. But it was still good to see where the Dead got up and running, including the house they lived in for awhile.

Sunday evening Selina and I chilled while Amanda saw her cousin Peggy and her husband Sean.

Amanda flies home before dawn on Monday. Selina and I start heading east.
