South-east Asia: An Adventure

We arrived in the pleasant town in the early hours of Friday morning, and were quite grateful when the guesthouse let us check in immediately. Our overnight bus journey had not been a very peaceful one and so after a quick breakfast at one of the nearby street stalls and exploration of the town, we opted for an afternoon rest. The goal of our exploration had in fact been to discover the beaches of Krabi; but it soon became very clear that Krabi was in fact situated on the banks of a river which flowed out to the see. We had to forego the idea of a refreshing swim for the next two days, much to our disappointment! We had at least seen a beautiful temple en route.

Most of the Thai towns liven up over the weekends, and Krabi is no exception. It has one of the most lively and food-filled walking streets/weekend markets we have experienced. After grabbing a snack or two as we quickly walked through the stalls, we bought a few beers and enjoyed them on the river promenade. The town has done a lot of effort to make the long, curving promenade a pleasant and scenic place to go for walks or to enjoy the local scene. Every few hundred metres one finds an interesting collection of sculptures or pretty garden scene. Added to this delightful image is the strange fish that run on the muddy river banks once the water has receded. We stared in amazement as the fish propelled themselves forward with their fins whilst chasing each other and little crabs (the beers certainly aided the bizarre feeling)! Sitting in the late afternoon sun, feeling the buzz of the night life, and enjoying a few local brews - a recipe for a good Friday evening.

We eventually meandered back to the walking street, which by then had music playing and tables filled with locals enjoying the cuisine. We ourselves ordered some interesting dishes, including a sticky brown rice 'cake' (yummy) and prawn salad (terrible). We called it an early night though, for we had many hours of sleep to catch up on.

The next morning we took a stroll through the great market; thoroughly explored the streets of Krabi; and then escaped the midday heat by staying indoors for a few hours. We could not resist repeating the evening before, and so we bought our beers and spent a few hours at the river promenade before going to the daily night market for a delicious helping of local curries and samoosas. After a another quick bite at the walking street next door, we headed back home to play chess, watch some series and relax. Sunday morning we went for a quick run; and then we packed up our things and hopped onto a local taxi destined for Ao Nang Beach.
