South-east Asia: An Adventure

The bus trip tp Siem Reap wasn't very eventful, and we arrived just in the afternoon. WE had found a decent guesthouse near the river, which made walking to Pub Street and the Old Market very pleasant (the walkway created along both sides of the river is lined with ancient trees, little benches, and has intermittent bridges of various styles). The first evening we strolled down to the Old Market area, did some "window" shopping, and then settled down at our favourite restaurant for some beers. The centre of the city was as lively as we had remembered, and we were glad to be back. We found some street stalls selling cheap food alongside the river walkway; and then we made our way to the Temple Club to watch some traditional Cambodian-style dances. It was actually a very interesting evening, where six traditional dances of the local people were first explained and then performed by young men and women.

The next two days were spent just walking about town, doing some shopping, and enjoying the drinking and dining scene. Our shopping experience on the third day was actually fun - we marched into the Old Market section with its hundreds of neat stalls and haggled with every single seller for the best prices. Eventually, elated and poor, we walked home with gifts for every family member and friend (and a little something for ourselves too).

Wednesday morning we went for a short run around the river and enjoyed the scene of locals walking about, exercising, or prepping for the day for once last time. We just had time to grab quick breakfast before our bus was ready for departure. Our last day in Cambodia had finally arrived. What a country we had the privilege of exploring.
