South-east Asia: An Adventure

Despite all the negative reviews we had heard about Can Tho, we find the place to be pretty and lively. The streets are not packed with people, there are markets about and a lovely waterfront area. We booked a superior room in a hotel - but because they only had a deluxe room available, they bumped us up to it and charged us the same price. Hello big room and balcony!

We arrived here on Sunday, checked in, and then walked about. Vietnam is extremely hot in summer, so we decided to stay in our room between 1 pm and 4 pm, daily - a nice little rest period, after which we enjoy a few beers at any of the waterfront bars.

Can Tho has a very nice night market, that is a perfect example of Vietnamese street food (which is really delicious). We bought all sorts of odd kebabs and pancakes and fried, dough-covered goodies. Any foodie's heaven. A girl that we had met at the homestay in An Binh joined us for the walk, and for a beer afterwards.

We rose very early the next morning, to catch a boat tour to the floating markets and fruit garden on the Mekong River. It was a lovely and scenic trip, stretching for hours on end and following the little canals flowing off the river, or the embankment of the large open water. One very memorable thing was how the boat driver peeled a pineapple (whilst steering) and presented it to us in two halves shaped like lollipops - delicious and amazing!

The fruit garden was beautiful - little animals everywhere, fruit trees and shrubs and waterways about. We were threatened many a time by the geese on the property - best guard dogs one can have! After walking about, we had a light lunch and fresh pineapple juice before heading home again. Our last evening was spent having many beers, street food, and TV.

Can Tho was a pleasant town with much ado.
