After the excitement of the last two days, a relaxed admin morning was a great change of pace. Topped off with a James Coffee from down the street.
Once we got moving, we went for a walk down towards the bay. San Diego is situated on a natural harbour that is protected by a peninsula, Point Loma, where the military base is. This is known as 'the bay'. We walked straight down through Little Italy as planes brushed overhead to the waters edge and strolled along the waterfront.
There is a large sailing culture and history here. Along the waterfront there are numerous sailing boats and cruise operators. We came to the San Diego Maritime Museum which detailed the history of sailing boats including a submarine and a massive sailing boat that was first used to transport new settlers to New Zealand in the 1860s. The ship was later purchased by the Alaska company and was used to transport goods to and from Alaska. It is still operational and
completes sea journeys even today.
A little further along the waterfront, and after sorting our train to Los Angeles for tomorrow, we found the USS Midway, an aircraft carrier that has been turned into a floating Navel museum, Crom is going to come back tomorrow! There is also a huge statue of the victory kiss, synonymous with the end of World War Two, a memorial to Bob Hope that plays his stand up material for new generations to enjoy, and a memorial to several other navy victories. Further around the waterfront is Seaport Village, a collection of restaurants, bars and shops complete with a Frank Sinatra impressionist. A pretty cool part of the city.
We got an uber over possibly the largest bridge we have seen to the island of Coronado. On the recommendation of Dana, we headed to the Coronado Brewery for some lunch and beer tasting. An awesome place with some amazingly good beers! After a few hours here tasting and watching baseball we set out to walk down to the beach and made it for sunset. A gorgeous sight well worth coming out here for!
A quick uber home before a wee ramen for dinner ended our last full day in San Diego. What a great place!
