Lisbon, the city built on seven hills, with its winding alleys. Picturesque trams and flower-decorated balconies. It is a cosmopolitan capital, but still exudes the charm of an old, nonchalant working-class district.

Reading about it is one thing, but experiencing it for real... You'll understand this vibrant, volatile city better by first getting a feel for Portuguese culture and history. Head to the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) to see exhibitions by contemporary artists, architects and thinkers, then to the Museum of Design and Fashion (MuDe), for examples of fashion and industrial design from the past 300 years.
