Last day in Saarland
Our last day in Saarland but before packing we headed off to Elversberg School. A State school it is one the school where our TGS boys go to when they come to visit. The purpose of this visit is to meet the principal and discuss exchanges and the prospect of more boys coming in future.
The school itself consists of several 3 story buildings and they house a couple of year groups in each block. The school is slightly run down in some patches yet indoors everything is painted with bright colours and is very vibrant. The school day runs from 8-4pm but Wednesday's are a half day. They have a brand new synthetic pitch which caters for their sport class.
We meet the principal and he is in jeans and shirt and has a pony tail with half a beard. Not what we expected but a nice enough person. We chat and things go well with a verbal agreement to continue the process and formalise the process of exchange.
We then continue the tour and speak to a teacher who talks with a american accent. She only spent 7 months there but has a very strong accent. We are told its from university where her lecturer was a yank.
The school follows a Scandinavian model with very open classrooms and no homework or assignments outside of school time. Students are in free dress and all seem to be working well.
We do the photo thing and then depart. On the way out we notice there is a pub at the school or right in edge of boundary. My kind of environment! Amazing how beer is such a socially accepted drink.
We make it back to the hostel to pack but had a stop off to look at Heinrich's house and neighbourhood where he grew.
The day was a bit poorly planned as we drove 45 mins into Elversberg and then back for lunch. We then drove back there for games. Maybe we should have left late to just stay in there.
The games went well. All teams won. Apparently the big boys played the Regional runners up. 11-0 later and the game was done and dusted. We then had a presentation and gave the 3 coaches who helped us gifts for their work.
Back to Braunshausen and bed. I was exhausted when we arrived home at 11.00pm.
