Scotland was once made up of various clans: Douglas, Fletcher, Malcolm, and Wallace, to name a few. The Battle of Culloden, which lasted roughly 1 hour, marked the end of the clans.
This was the final battle during the Jacobite rising of 1745. The Jacobites, which included many of the Highland clans, supported the Catholic Prince Charles and considered him the rightful ruler of Britain. Unsurprisingly, the Protestant King George II disagreed.
The clans utilized the Highland Charge, a shock tactic which involved charging the enemy with axes, knives, and swords. This proved to be no match for the English skill with firearms and within an hour, 1,500-2,000 Jacobites (of approximately 7,000), lay dead on the battlefield. The Battle of Culloden marked the end of both the Jacobite rising and the clan culture.
We walked around the battlefield with an audio tour and learned about the events that led to Culloden. We also found the Clan Fraser stone (which should be of interest to any Outlander fans out there).
