Our first stop the next morning was Edinburgh Castle. It's up on a big hill (fairly smart, strategically) and completely dominates the skyline of Edinburgh. Like most things we saw, its history is very lengthy, but there's been a military stronghold on this site since at least the 12th century.
Lots to see at Edinburgh Castle, including a war memorial (where we found a few Scottish Irwins), great hall, prisons, the Scottish Crown Jewels and Stone of Destiny (which British monarchs sit on during his/her coronation), the National War Museum, and even a pet cemetery.
