Eilean Donan, or island of Donan, is one of the most frequently photographed castles in Scotland and has also been used in movies. A castle was first built on this site in the 13th century and it played a role in several Scottish uprisings. In 1719, the English blew it up, which seems to have been a bit of a trend. Urquhart Castle, which we had just seen on Loch Ness, was also blown up by the English.
The ruins of Eilean Donan remained for about 200 years. In the early 1900s, rebuilding began and it was officially completed in 1932, though the reconstruction's appearance is different than the original castle. Eilean Donan is still inhabited, but part of it is open to visitors.
