The next morning we woke up to a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains, the sun has come back again. After another yummy breakfast we said our goodbyes and headed to Fox Glacier for an uphill walk to what remains of the glacier. The scenery was out of this world! Day 12: New Zealand South Island 2017

The next morning we woke up to a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains, the sun has come back again. After another yummy breakfast we said our goodbyes and headed to Fox Glacier for an uphill walk to what remains of the glacier. The scenery was out of this world! We were unable to get too close but close enough to see the glacier face and the torrent of melt water coming from underneath it. It is hard to believe the rate at which the glacier is melting away...

About 2 kilometres back down the valley there is a signpost proclaiming that this was the point of the glacier face in 1935... We were told that the entire glacier could be gone in 10 years!
After the walk we headed along the west coast towards Westport. The initial part of the drive was nice but the drive from Greymouth to Westport was absolutely breathtaking, with the rugged coast on one side and mountains on the other, the winding road hugging the coast, with the eventual highlight being the pancake rocks at Punakaiki with its booming blow holes - pure magic!
Once in Westport we went grocery shopping and had dinner on the balcony of our motel room on Carters Beach, enjoying the beautiful sunset, distant ocean view and a cold beer. Another excellent accommodation choice, with a spacious room, kitchenette and a small balcony with a sunset view.
