Did a day trip to Mt Cook to see glaciers and to complete the Hooker Valley Track walk. The walk starts where the road ends and is 12 km return rising 80 metres over 6 km. There are 3 suspension bridges to negotiate across the raging Hooker River, which empties into the glacial Hooker Lake complete with icebergs. The glacier face sits at the top end of the lake and is, not surprisingly, called Hooker Glacier (Anglo-Celts are less than creative in their place names), where our walk ended. All up 3 hours of walking plus 30 mins at the glacier in the howling wind and the thunderous sound of a distant avalanche on the walk back, fantastic! Back in Aoraki/Mt Cook village we had hamburger, espresso (best coffee in NZ - I kid you not!) and soy chai latte at the Old Mountaineer's Cafe, excellent! Once back on our balcony in Twizel we finished off the other half of our sashimi with a Montana Sauvignon Blanc (on special at $7.99) .
