Paris

-The People of Paris-

During my time here in Paris, I have noticed that the people of Paris are a lot nicer than I thought they would be. The main stereotype of Parisians is that they are snooty, rude, stuck up and mean. I have met some rude people, but it is defiantly not all of them. Most of them have been helpful and kind. When I order or try to speak French, most of them respond in English, I think my American accent gives it away. They also want to practice their English more than they would like us to practice our French. Some French people have helped me with my French or my pronunciation, but most of them do not help. Only people that we are investing in or are involved with help us, total strangers do not help.

I have noticed that they are very private people and they do not like to attract a lot of attention to themselves. They keep to themselves and are polite if they bump into you or if they are in your way. One thing I did not see coming was all the smoking. I think that 98% of French people smoke, in the streets, in cafes, in restaurants, in houses, in churches, and in the metro. It's 24/7 everyday habit that is everywhere we go, it has come to the point where I am so used to it, I can't smell it anymore.

As far as fashion goes, a lot of French people layer and wear natural colors. They really like their sneakers, tennis shoes, flats, and Adidas. I originally thought that most women in Paris would wear high heels, however, because there is so much walking they wear comfortable flat shoes. I have also noticed that people have their own style and are very free to express it here. I feel like American style is yes iconic and inspirational, but people are afraid to truly wear what they want, not wanting to be judged for it. Here in Paris, people wear exactly want they want and they have no problem expressing who they are. I really have admired this quality of the Paris culture because it has inspired me to not only think of other styles but has set me free to wear what I would like.

The people here have really made an impact on my life. I have truly enjoyed everyone so much and am so grateful for the MLK staff. I would have to say that Gaélle, Jeff, Nicolas, Beatriz, and Emmanuelle have all made a great impact on my life. These are the main people at MLK we go to for everything and they always have our best interest in mind. They have to give us so much wise counsel and there have been a lot of great moments with all of them. They have opened up their lives, their homes, their time, their effort and their families to us, while consistently loving on us. I will miss them greatly once this adventure is over and I hope to someday come back to see them!
