Notre Dame
Notre Dame, one of Frances prize possessions, a building that not only resembles European Gothic Art but has been an inspiration for other buildings. The cathedral construction officially started in 1163 and did not open until 1345. The building resembles Gothic architecture in many ways. The windows, rooftops, and arches all come to a very pointed peak towards the top. This is a common character trait in Gothic architecture. Flying buttresses, ribbed vaults, and columns are all characteristics of Gothic architecture. Ruskin mentions,' it was one of the first Gothic cathedrals to have arched exterior supports known as "flying buttresses"' (Ruskin). Notre Dame is also well-known for their glass stained windows. This is truly a sight to see! Inside the cathedral, there is an altar at the very front and mini altars all around the building. There are also sculptures of saints and Mary that are place all around. Inside there are pews where people can sit for mass. Outside there are gargoyles statutes that sit near the top, looking over the street. Notre Dame symbolizes the "eye" of Paris, or the "book" of Paris because it shows the change in art and history throughout time. Notre Dame is 425 feet long, 157 feet wide, and 114 feet high. The stain glass window or the rose windows is 32 feet around. The columns are 16 feet high. To this day it is one of the largest religious buildings in the world and it is located in the heart of Paris, Ile de la Cite.
This was one of my favorite places to visit while living in France. I loved the architecture, and the cathedral itself. This building is a fantastic landmark that is very impressive to look at. I would love to visit again!
