Weddings

Weddings in SL are a lot different to weddings anywhere else around the world which makes our country a lot more special than other countries.

In Sri Lanka there is a tradition where the bride and groom stand on a poruwa and do a function that is more commonly known as the poruwa ceremony. One of the weddings we went to was my auntys wedding and we were lucky enough to watch the poruwa ceremony. At the poruwa ceremony the bride and groom get handed bulath leaves and the leaves hold money and coins inside and when the bride and groom get handed them, they dump the bulath leaves on

the floor one after the other.

One of my favorite parts is the mouth-watering food that they serve at the wedding. When you a seated at your tables the waiters will come around and hand you some drinks (sprite, coke or juice is most popular) and also something to snack on while you are waiting for lunch (murukku or kadala is most common).

Later it will be lunch time. They will give you rice and many other things to go with it such as cutlets, fish, chicken, beans and carrot chopsi and many other thing. Smile for the photo! Finally we were able to get a beautiful photo taken in all our wonderful dresses and suits with the bride and groom. Then the couple would hand us thank you cards as a special souvenir and for everyone to remember that special moment!
