Taronga Zoo

P.S. and we went to the Zoo!, 03.12.2024

Almost didn't make it here, but we had extra time waiting for work on our dinghy to get done, so we went to the zoo! And, so glad we did! Located right on Sydney Harbour, the zoo is home to over 4000 animals, including Australian native wildlife as well as rare and endangered exotic animals. The zoo does a good job of conservation with research and work to support wildlife & habitats in Australia and around the world. We learned a thing or two today. I never saw or knew about the rare Cassowary bird - this large flightless colorful bird can be over 150lb and almost 6' tall, is considered the world's most dangerous bird, is native to NE Australia and New Guinea. Rainforest diversity and health depends on these birds to spread their seeds - by pooping around the forest. The Blue Quandong rainforest tree can only grow after its seeds have passed through the cassowary's gut. No Cassowary = No Blue Quandong. We also saw the endangered Fijian crested iguana, just discovered in 1979 - originally found on 14 islands of Fiji, all remaining now live only on one island, Yadua Taba.

What a Great Day! So many amazing animals!
XOXOXOXO Gma & Gpa
