Gma's & Gpa's Great Adventures

We are finally back on Nutmeg. She has had a lot of work done. And we have all had a nice break and wonderful travels. The boat now needs to be prepped, fine-tuned and tested out for our passage to Sydney. After a couple of days back onboard, we motor out of Marsden Cove Marina early morning to watch the sun rise and motor sail to the BAY OF ISLANDS. It a beautiful sunny morning – much different than the morning of our arrival 3 mos ago!

The Bay of Islands encompass over 140 subtropical islands and inland villages along the northeast shore of the North Island - known for its undeveloped beaches, big-game fishing and rich history and culture. We spend a few nights in the marina at Opua, take a bus to Paihia for a day, then anchor out near the 19th-century whaling port of Russell. The historic waterfront village is full of remnants from its days as the country’s first colonial capital. We also watched Whitey’s team almost win the Super Bowl. (Natalie’s team won instead.)

We anchor a couple more days in stunning Twin Lagoons Bay at Motuarohia / Roberton Island, a rugged gem of an island, first discovered by Captain Cook in 1769, who anchored the Endeavour just off its shores in what is now known as Cook’s Bay. At the time, the island was inhabited by up to 300 Māori, who were initially hostile towards the explorer. Cook was later offered the hospitality of the natives and peace was restored.

Nutmeg is happy to be back on the water and has passed her tests. Back to the marina at Opua to fine-tune a few more things, top off our fuel, check out at immigration and we are OFF to Sydney!
