The Altare della Patria was built to celebrate the unification of Italy under Victor Emanuel II in 1925. This building is almost like a Roman temple on top of a pedestal that some Americans decided looked like a wedding cake. This building was built to signify a unified Italy but it did not take long for all of Europe to be enveloped in turmoil. The first and then the second world wars broke out in quick succession.
