Wozny Road trip 2018

We drove up to the Pensacola Museum Aviation and lighthouse museum - lots stairs but quite the view. The sand is so white it looks like snow. The lighthouse is still in use. The museum is huge. We took the guided tours and I even managed to get a selfie with Nixon. The tours are done by volunteers who have served and who had lots of stories to add to the experience. Just a few interesting tidbit from the museum: the first plane to successfully fly across the ocean was there; the plane that did reconnaissance during the Cuban missile crisis; and a plane that was at Pearl Harbour (on the ground), battle at Midaway (200 bullet holes) and then crashed into Lake Micheghan on it’s second flight training pilots after the war. They had interesting stories and info on the Vietnam war which were similar to some we heard last year while actually in Vietnam. They had the plane (Birddog) flown by an escaping South Vietnam pilot with his wife and 5 children (made for two) at the end of the war. It followed fleeing helicopters to an aircraft carrier. They requested permission to land via dropping notes. The personnel pushed other helicopters off the flight deck so that the pilot could safely land. It was an interesting day. We made our way toward ‘home’ but first stopped for a great supper at the Tin Cow in the old part of Pensacola. We walked a couple blocks up and down and enjoyed some of the views as it was a funky neighbourhood.
