It’s been raining for 24 hours straight. Creeks are up but we are on high ground. We had a lazy morning and then headed to the Buckstaff Bath house which has been in operation since 1912. Amazing building with lots of marble and tile work. They follow essentially the same procedures as they did 100 years ago. So, we went for it- strip, get wrapped in a sheet. Hop in an old tub filled with cooled down, but still very hot water from the local hot spring. Loofa scrub by an attendant of your back and legs and then left to soak for 15 minutes. The tub had a jet stream...Dave has a very interesting description of this... Then you get wrapped up again and you go to a table where they wrap you in hot towels and bring a cold towel for your face. (Dave’s side was similar but slightly different). After this I sat in an old style metal box steamer with my head sticking out (Dave’s was a small steam room). After that was a weird sitz bath which was like an angled sink on the ground that you sat in. An old needle shower gave a good rinse. Massage and then parrafin hand wax finalized this pampering session. Drinks at The Ohio, BBQ at Stubbys, and then to the trailer, furnace and warm blanket all rounded out this very fun day. Somewhere in there we got some free spring water from one of the many fountains around town - it comes out very hot, straight from the spring so lovely on a cold day!
