The drive from Anchorage onto the Kenai Peninsula via the Sterling and Seward Highways was stunningly beautiful. The highway initially followed the picturesque Turnagain Arm (saw another Beluga whale and Mt. Denali) before heading south and inland. We climbed through the Kenai Mountains and then dropped down to sea level and the Cook Inlet. The second half of the drive followed the northern section of the Alaska’s Cook Inlet Volcanoes, part of the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’ and formed a gorgeous scenic backdrop to our drive to Homer.

Homer sits on the end of the Kenai Peninsula at its southern most point. Surrounded by the Cook Inlet and the Kachemak Bay (and multiple glaciers), the end of the road town is known as the Halibut Fishing Capital of the World (and it’s home to some of the crab boats from Deadliest Catch). One of Homer’s most interesting features is the Homer Spit, a 4.5- mile finger of land that juts out into the Kachemak Bay. The Spit is lined with shops, restaurants, galleries, beaches and a large harbor.
We spent our time in Homer exploring the area. We took a ridge top drive along the length of the Kachemak Bay, walked on the beach, visited the local farmers’ market, shopped on the Spit, wandered among the boats in the harbor, checked out the world famous Salty Dawg Saloon, watched the halibut cleaning process and went out to dinner with friends. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Homer.
