Cookie Para Mi

On first impressions…
Really just a stopover destination. The guys from the boat were also in town so we managed a catch up with them. We also found a cosy Australian-esk cafe with good coffee and food to relax in.

On further examination…
One afternoon we got stuck in the cafe during a torrential down pour. The rain was so heavy, rivers of water came tunnelling from the roof through the cafe and out into the flooded streets. Our waitress was lovely and whilst being trapped together in the flooded cafe, we were again reminded of how lucky we are to have been born and live in Australia. She was from Venezuela... with the current political situation there, she had fled to Colombia without her family to find work and a better life. For her efforts, she was paid poorly, she felt insecure in her home because her roommate tried to abuse her and she couldn’t afford to change her situation. She is frequently out of contact with her family because of the government restrictions on internet. Yet she smiled, laughed and was interested in those around her. She wanted to learn and to make her life better. It’s these reminders that you need sometimes, to put things into perspective, to realise just how lucky we are.
