My Rome

During our final days in Rome, we spent some time traveling around the city experiencing different spots that were in relation to WWII. One particular spot that we visited had a story that really struck me was the march done by the Nazis that lead to the death of 325 people. Every day like clockwork, the Nazi soldiers would march down this narrow street and terrorize the neighborhood. Because of their predictability, a group of independents organized an attack on the Nazis and killed 34 soldiers. Once Hitler found out about this attack he ordered his S.S. officers to kill 10 people for every one of his soldiers that were killed. This order had to be carried out within 24 hours and made the S.S officers round up 320 people. The soldiers accidentally retrieved 325 people instead of 320 which became a trial during the war crime acts. This massacre is what this sculpture is depicting and overall shapes the story of Rome because of how Roman citizens came together and fought to make their country safe.
