There is probably little argument over the fact that the Sistine Chapel is one of, if not the most, best depictions of high Renaissance. The Sistine Chapel is a chapel in the Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the Pope, in Vatican City. Originally known as the Cappella Magna, the chapel takes its name from Pope Sixtus IV, who restored it between 1477 and 1480. Since that time, the chapel has served as a place of both religious and other functions carried out by the papacy. Today it is the site of the Papal conclave, the process by which a new pope is selected. When a new pope is being selected smoke burns out of a smoke stack that is connected to the same building in which this chapel resides. The fame of the Sistine Chapel lies mainly in the frescos that decorate the interior, and most particularly the Sistine Chapel ceiling and The Last Judgment by Michelangelo. The walls, however are not painted by Michelangelo; instead, they have been done by many different Renaissance painters. The Sistine Chapel, while holds a strong page in politics really is well known for the amazing art seen inside. This art done by Michelangelo aids in Rome’s story because it shows the complexity of Roman people and their need for outrageous, but beautiful art.
