Although Rome is known for its great history of one the largest empires and its political strategies and ideas, I think that Rome is best known for its art and artists. In our final class, we made a visit to the Galleria Borghese, where we saw many famous pieces done by Bernini. One of his most notable sculptures is the depiction of Apollo and Daphne. Bernini constructed this masterpiece between 1622 and 1625. This sculpture was a Baroque, life-sized marble entitled Apollo and Daphne. The myth that is depicted by this sculpture goes as such; Apollo clutches Daphne’s hip pursuing her as she flees trying to escape him after he has been pierced by one of Cupid’s arrows that has made him fall madly in love with Daphne. On the other hand, Daphne has also been struck by one of Cupid’s arrows, but instead of falling in love with Apollo she is disgusted by him. Apollo desperate and longing wears a laurel crown foreshadowing Daphne’s metamorphosis into the laurel tree. Daphne is portrayed halfway through her metamorphosis into the laurel tree with her arms already transforming into its branches as she flees and calls to her Father to save her from Apollo. Sculptures constructed by artists like Bernini help tell the story of Rome because it takes old pagan myths and sheds light on them in new artistic ways, allowing the continuation of the stories.
