My Rome

Even though this is the main cathedral of Florence, when this cathedral was being constructed, the architecture of the Dome had a major impact on Rome in advertently. The construction of the Duomo of Florence began in 1296 in the Gothic style with the design of Cambio, but was not completed for many years until Brunelleschi finished the dome in 1436. This basilica is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink, bordered by white and has an elaborate 19th century Gothic Revival façade, constructed by Fabris. During the Dark Ages the “blue prints” for the construction of massive domes was lost, so for many years this cathedral was left incomplete and was seen as a disgrace to Florence. When Brunelleschi was hired by the Medici family, they and a counsel of elites were originally skeptical of his plans, as he explained how he would fix the dome with a hardboiled egg that he smashed at the tip to make is stand upright. Brunelleschi’s idea was to take sections of the dome and to build it through alternating rings. He used this idea from his many years of being an artist. Although skeptical, his brilliance allowed for the completion of this beautiful cathedral, which ultimately effected Roman architecture for their own Duomo’s.
