I drove today to Pensacola for a short overnight and a repeat visit to the Museum located on NAS Pensacola. The facility is first-class and has expanded from my first visit a decade ago. The technology of the F-14 Tomcat on the pedestal is daunting compared to the seemingly primitive cockpit of my first Navy training aircraft, a T-34B Mentor. I also attempted to visit my first flight training base, NAS Saufley, on the outskirts of Pensacola but was turned away by the gate guards who told me that it is no longer an active airport--now its a federal prison.
