RV Trip

Even though I am with the RV in Baton Rouge, I drove an hour south of town today to Carville, LA on the banks of the Mississippi River. Although the Museum is located on an active LA National Guard base, the facility was used for many years as a quarantine area for patients with Hansen's Disease (leprosy), HD. Normally about four hundred patients were housed here and cared for by medical professionals and Sisters from a local convent; over a hundred children were also patients. After a successful treatment was found, the facility closed down its operation and today the last three elderly patients live in a home in Baton Rouge. It turns out that HD is not highly contagious with about 95% of us having a natural immunity. Medical treatment today consists of out-patient care. A small interesting story was that the local Coca Cola bottling company would not take the return bottles from the facility (fearing a backlash if the public knew); so, the patients used the bottles as borders for flower gardens and interesting yard displays, the star.
