This 1800's re-created village is operated by a local association for mentally challanged citizens and is a collection of both original and recently built, historically accurate structures. Seven houses were moved from their original locations and re-assembled with furnishings to portray the lifestyles of the owners. One of the houses was used as a functioning home until 1973. The store, blacksmith shop, and chapel were built on-site; the chapel's pews (maybe twenty) were fashioned by a local craftsman to replicate the design of a surviving one; he also built a weaving loom for another structure. A cistern by one house had a wood storage tank for roof water run-off but it had a brick base which was used as a form of refrigeration--cool water above, thick bricks on the sides, and a clay bottom. The Aurelie Bernard House was originally constructed in St. Martinsville circa 1800 with an addition added in 1840 and is the oldest structure in the village.
