The Opportunist Traveler

Only three weeks after returning to Singapore we were off again. This
time to Rawa island a small secluded island off the east coast of Malaysia. We boarded our coach at Newton Station and headed off towards Woodlands in order to cross the border into Malaysia. When
crossing into Malaysia from Singapore you need to go through two border checks. As we were in a coach this made the process even
more painful and long and it took over an hour to cross into Malaysia.
Once over the border we drove for another couple of hours until we
reached the port town of Mersing. Here we were made to wait for our
ferry, along with all of the other tired travelers from Singapore. The
ferry was actually a small speed boat and we bounced along at a fast
pace towards Rawa island. The journey only took 30 minutes and I
was glad to get off the boat. Rawa island was tiny, with only two
resort hotels facing the mainland and one main beach. We arrived
and were shown to our bungalow which was close to the beach. We
spent the day relaxing on the beach, snorkeling on the coral reef and
kayaking around the island.
On the second day we went for a walk to explore the island and found
a tennis court at the top of the hill. Our resort had one large dining
room where they served a buffet style breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Next to the beach was a bar where they served cocktails until late into
the evening. The resort also had a ping pong table and a volley ball
net. The neighboring resort was full of backpackers and had a lively
bar which we went to one night. The resort was a perfect place to
relax and unwind for the weekend. The water was turquoises blue
with white sandy beaches and it felt like paradise.
