Today is a really sad day. We both don’t want to leave Italy! The two weeks we have had here has been amazing, but there is so much more to see, we will be back!
We packed up our bags and headed to the local cafe for a croissant and an espresso breakfast before wandering down the road to find the bus to the airport. In doing our research for this part of the trip we were originally looking at catching a train from Venice to Belgrade in Serbia for a night then onto Sofia in Bulgaria for a night and then onto Turkey. When looking this up it was going to take 6 trains and about 44 hours of travel to do this, not the best use of time. Luckily we found a Ryanair flight from Venice to Sofia for £15 each. This was an hour and a half flight, so a much better option!
The airport experience was oddly fine, even though the Treviso airport is mainly for Ryanair flights. Also Venice Treviso as Ryanair calls is not actually in Venice, it’s in Treviso. It’s about an hour away from Venice. Once through security we passed on the duty free and went to get one last Italian sandwich and espresso before leaving Italy.
An hour and a half later we landed in Sofia. From the time the plane landed to the time to walked out of the airport was about 20 minutes. This has to be a record for an international flight, even though it was within the EU, we were the only plane landing and the plane was half full. We found the Metro, which is new from the airport and isn’t even on Goggle. All the advice we have read about Sofia says that the taxis are rip off merchants so don’t use them. A Metro sounds like a great idea!
Once in the city we found our accommodation and had probably the most thorough check in ever. Davam was the guy working and he was awesome. He gave us maps, recommended free walking and food tours and once he found out we were looking to go to Turkey he called the bus company to find out the deal with tickets. Absolute legend.
Dinner was at a local Bulgarian place, Moma, recommended by Davam. Bulgarians like meat and beer. As such Jo had a vegetable stew and a wine for dinner. We will see if we can convert her in the next couple of days.
