John and Nancy's Excellent Adventure

Today we woke up to a beautiful sunny day, had breakfast, said goodbye to Canyon Lodge and set off in the direction of Grand Teton National Park. On the way we stopped to see some areas of hydrothermal activity which we hadn't visited, like Mud Volcano, Sulphur Caldron and West Thumb Basin. Mud Volcano is a 17 foot deep burbling pot of watery clay. Nearby, hot stream from 170 degree water belches from Dragon's Mouth Spring. And Sulphur Caldron is one of Yellowstone's most acidic hot springs, on a par with battery acid. It boils with yellow color created from sulphur and bacteria. West Thumb Geyser Basin is a smaller caldera within the larger Yellowstone Caldera. It contains 11 hot springs, 3 geysers, fumaroles and mud pots. The geyser basin dumps more than 3100 gallons of hot water daily into Yellowstone Lake. I love the names of these places. Anyhow, after hiking around these areas we left Yellowstone and drove into Grand Teton.
The Tetons command your attention from the minute you enter the park. They are spectacularly beautiful. We stayed at Signal Mountain Lodge and had a fabulous view from our room, of the mountains and Jackson Lake. Hopefully we captured some of the beauty in our pictures.
This first night we ate pizza at Leek's Marina which was owned by Signal Mountain Lodge and had been highly recommended.
