John and Nancy's Excellent Adventure

Today we made the most of our full day in Cody. We went to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, called the "Smithsonian of the West". It encompasses 5 entities- the Buffalo Bill Museum, all about the man himself and the west he loved; the Cody Firearms Museum, where we saw every imaginable kind of gun, including some belonging to Teddy Roosevelt as well as guns belonging to TV heroes like The Cartwrights, Matt Dillon, Wyatt Earp, Paladin etc.; the Draper Natural History Museum, where we learned about the animals and the geology of the region; the Whitney Western Art Museum featuring works of artists of the west; and the Plains Indian Museum, with exhibits showing how the Indians of the plains lived and the sad history of their treatment. Needless to say, it took us all day and we could have returned if we had more time. They had a raptor show in which we met 3 of the 9 birds who live at the museum- a bald eagle, a turkey vulture and an American Kestrel. Finally we heard 2 guides' lectures about Buffalo Bill and about the plains Indians. It is a wonderful place.
Late in the day we went to the Buffalo Bill Dam which, when it was finished in 1910, was the tallest dam in the world at 328 feet. We saw a video about the building (very difficult) of the dam and then could walk out on top of it.
To top off our full day we went to Dan Miller's Cowboy Music Revue which was really fun and entertaining. I particularly liked the old favorite "Whiskey Before Breakfast".
Dinner that night was at Cassie's Supper Club where we had live music and watched the local couples dancing, while we ate. Fun.
