This was a driving day. We went through the Bighorn National Forest and up and over the Bighorn Mountains which topped out at more than 9000 feet. After those ups and downs, we drove through prairie lands, on roads where the speed limit was 80 mph- my kind of freeway!
We went to see Devil's Tower, made famous in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". Then we drove through beautiful Spearfish Canyon and on to the town of Deadwood, where Wild Bill Hickok was shot in the back, while playing poker, by an unsuccessful gambler, Jack McCall. His poker hand supposedly had black aces and eights, and is now known as the "dead man's hand". Deadwood is now a town of gambling casinos and tourist traps.
Finally we reached Rapid City, South Dakota, checked in to our hotel and had a delicious and relaxing dinner.
