Jamille & Sacha's Americas trip

Tonight, we did a ghost tour in the French Quarter. Our guide, Evie, had done a history degree and as she puts it, “this is one of only four jobs for which the degree qualifies me.”

We meet at the designated point and Evie takes us on a tour of various houses and establishments to tell us the history of Madame LaLaurie and her house of horrors, vampire Jacque St. Germaine and French pirate Jean Lafitte. Words like Strigoi and Nosferatu fly around. At the end of the tour, I realised I read way too many supernatural books because I knew most of her references.

While interesting, the most amusing part of the tour was the people watching. This time it was a man in his late 20s with his girlfriend. He was African American, muscly, had a very cool goatee tied in 3 places, shiny shoes and was confidently talkative. She was white, quiet and looked a bit hippy. At first, he came across as the macho man while she was meek and mild. This soon changed. The guy had the heeby jeebies about everything the guide was saying. After the story at each house, he would cross the road to avoid walking near it saying, “Why she gotta keep walkin on the side of the house she talkin about?” Halfway through the tour, Evie told us to go into a bar to have a drink and she would tell us a story about it afterwards. He refused to go in. He was definitely worth a few giggles.
