We talked about the stories of Hezekiah and of David and Goliath and the similarities in their faith. And then, I opened up Dr. Seuess’ Hop on Pop, and folks, that was the end of it all. I got to be with the 3rd and 4th grade today, though for an hour, I had 3-6 graders. I read at least three books – they soak it up! We talked about the stories of Hezekiah and of David and Goliath and the similarities in their faith. And then, I opened up Dr. Seuess’ Hop on Pop, and folks, that was the end of it all. They loved it. If you are not familiar, it is just silly rhymes. We worked on pronunciation and listening for the similarities in words. By halfway through the book, we were drumming and dancing to the lines. I would
read and they would repeat after me. and then we'd do it again. We were all a little disappointed when the lunch bell clanged. At least I was!
At lunch, Cletus and I started blowing up balloons to give out. It was fun for about 5 minutes and then it got UGLY. The shoving and fighting, the begging and deceit. I finally had to take the remaining ones and go inside. I regrouped and went out to play Simon Says and cheer on races. Whew. My mistake – I should have known better.
After lunch, we split the group so small numbers could work on the puzzle while others could work through Hop on Pop more. It was just a really good time. I had little Sunday school pins that say “God Loves You” that I gave out. And then the hugging and high fives, and a few stolen kisses on my
cheek. I felt like I might be weighed down to the ground by the kids hanging off me as we said goodbye. It was so sweet and Dejoy just laughs and laughs. He said “you are a magnet and the kids are steel!” I was touched when he continued on encouraging my unique spirit (he called it something like that!) – that I am made to be a social worker – in the connecting with people way. I can’t exactly remember what he said but I will treasure the intention of conversation always.
Prayers:
*Thanksiving for the teachers: Cletus, Clarence and Comfort
*Clarity in next steps for the school to take in creating sustainability
* That the children feel valued, smart, capable, cherished
