I finally got to meet my college friend’s (Greta) husband in July of 2020. Eddie is from Liberia and they met on Mercy Ships. We had a great time hanging out together in Rapid City and I enjoyed getting to know Eddie. I could sense he has a heart to return to his home community in Liberia (they live in Minnesota currently) to give back. This, of course, was intriguing. If you know me at all, I have been praying and dreaming of where to direct my passion and education in helping globally. I thought about our conversations once in awhile but
with the pandemic life, I did not have the bandwidth to pay attention to this.
One day last spring (2021), I text Greta and asked if she thought Eddie might want to consider starting a non-prof with me. Her repsonse? "Call him now." And that was the beginning of many conversations and times of prayer. I have met via WhatsApp his pastor from Monrovia. He is the leader of Covenant Ministries Inc. They have started a school, Covenant Mission Academy. Though Pastor Wesley has some supporters around the world, the support is informal and inconsistent. We have been in dialogue about whether or not we can be of support to CMI. Greta, Eddie and I are leaving for Monrovia on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 after months of praying and dreaming.
A friend of mine always advised me when I felt stuck, "Just take the next step and the momentum will carry you." He is right. Sending that text to Greta that day - as bananas as I thought it was to ask the questions - started the conversation and the planning. One small step of faith is sometimes just the thing that is needed and quite often the only thing we can do.
Your prayers are coveted:
*Travels - peace, safety, health (and negative COVID tests) - travel January 4-16
*Relationships - honesty, good communication across cultural differences, enjoyment in making new friends
*Wisdom and clarity in asking questions and gathering the needed information
*For my words - I have been asked to speak at a bible program graduation - let my words be God-honoring and inspiring
*We have momentum in making this trip - let us continue to listen to God's voice and be patient
Thanks for joining me on our journey. Praying we will find opportunity to join in partnership with our brothers and sisters in Liberia. As Pastor Wesley says "by God's grace."
