Oh the places you'll go!

There was nothing about this country we didn't enjoy and I don't think you can really go wrong no matter where you go within the country. We combined a snow trip with a culture adventure and despite Nathan rupturing his ACL on day 3, he didn't let that get in the way.

Top of the list was definitely Ginzan Onsen where we had to get a Japanese person to book the accommodation and decipher the bus timetable to get there. The town had a population of about 100 and there were no other westerners in sight. A small river runs through the centre of town with pedestrian only access. We stayed the night in a traditional ryokan with onsens and traditional meals and the lack of English certainly didn't hinder the enthusiasm levels of staff. Safe to say it was one of the most incredible experiences of our lives and would definitely recommend an overnight trip!

Other must dos include Miyajima, where you can visit a tidal shrine and hang with the resident island deer; Shirakawa-go a historic village filled with thatched houses; and

cat cafes in Tokyo – make sure it's one where you can pet them because we got ripped off!

Most of all, the people are what make Japan so great. Everyone was super friendly and extremely willing to help. Don't be afraid to try out some amateur Japanese, they love it!

All the best for your married life, I hope it's full of exciting travel, laughs and great memories! Em xx
