Tickets are valid for buses, trams, trolleybuses, the Underground and the urban routes of Cotral regional buses. They can also be used on regional railways such as Rome-Lido, Rome-Viterbo, Rome-Giardinetti and on Trenitalia regional trains (2nd class urban route).
Ticket vending machines are located in many parts of the city, at bus terminals and in all the subway stations. Tickets can be purchased at tobacconists and newsagents.
You must have a ticket before getting on the bus otherwise you will get a fine.
Make sure you keep your ticket until the end of your journey because ticket inspectors might ask you to show it and also because you may have to punch it again at the exit in some stations.
You can also buy tickets with your smartphone with the app “myCicero” and validate it while boarding the bus, by clicking “Validate” on the screen where the ticket is shown. Inspectors on the bus will verify ticket validity and after 100 minutes the ticket will automatically expire.
If you validate the ticket for the underground a QR code will be generated in order to open the turnstile. It works also with NFC-enabled devices. The ticket is valid for a single journey on the underground.
