The Louvre
Friday morning Wren and I woke up and decided we would do the Louvre together. But first, breakfast. As Paris is known to be a foodies delight, I was as of yet a little disappointed with the selection I'd had since. Still on the lookout for a fabulous place to eat. Of course, because I'm not a foodie, my standard are pretty low. So how delighted was I to find a pub near our hostel- The Dunkerque- that served the most amazing eggs benedict ever! The hollandaise sauce was perfect. Good shade of yellow and a little bit tart- not easy to find in Canada where the norm is the powdered mix you add water to.
So after a very satisfying breakfast we set out to endure the lines up and crowds that would be at the Louvre with us. And they were there in good form. The initial line up outside the main doors is just for security- the ticket office is inside, and has another que for us to get into. Actually the line up didn't take longer than 30 minutes to get through and then we were inside where they smartly put automated ticket boxes- like in the theaters back home. I grab out tickets and we choose one of 4 doors to go through and begin our tour.
We started in the Greek sculpture area. Moved through this quickly- Wren wanted to see the Mona Lisa. Onto some other century and decade of art and culture that at the time was the peak of the civilized world. This goes on for several rooms and different decades. I did start snapping photos, but then found I was easily overwhelmed. This place is massive!
In total we spent 3 hours at the Louvre, only find the Mona Lisa- small and insignificant as she was placed in a huge room with paparazzi and devout art lovers/connoisseur cramming in to get a close up- all this for a painting only a little bigger than the laptop I'm writing this on. She smiled demurely as ever as I managed to get a photo of the crowd in front of her and her frame- that's it. My pilgrimage was complete and Wren and I were ready to go.
Hop back on the Parisian tube back to the hostel for Wren to write some postcards and me to do some gift shopping.
