Around the World in Many Days, I: South West Africa

Apparently, Windhoek is a city where one sleeps by day and plays cards by night. Or perhaps it is a city where another watches over the sleeping by day and plays cards with the sleepless by night.

Naturally, such jet-lagged antics are hardly conducive to exploring a new city, and the foreign eye, when at last abroad, is understandably more apt to notice the alien than the appealing. As when one wanders along streets named Beethoven or Liszt or Grieg, or Pasteur or Jenner or Nightingale, where every house is solidly walled and every wall surmounted by an electric fence.

Accommodations:
- Windhoek Gardens Guest House (2 nights; very nice)
- Chameleon Backpackers (2 nights; noisy till late at night)
