The day started for me with a 10km run to the Golden Gate Bridge from the hotel. Jo walked. The girls slept. The calves still hurt!
It was a typical tourist day in San Francisco. We had breakfast in Starbucks and we took the traditional Cable car (having queued for around 45 minutes) to Union Square. We wandered around Chinatown before making our way to an area which used to be solely used by ferries. It has been really well developed so that it also now includes a seriously good food hall.
After lunch we walked to the Alcatraz ferry and spent a very informative couple of hours on the island. Alcatraz was a state penitentiary for around thirty years from 1934. It only had 250 prisoners or so over that period. Admittedly they were the most ruthless criminals of their time (for example Al Capone). It was interesting to hear about the lives of inmates but the worst thing for them must have been be able to see San Francisco and 'normal life' from the prison.
Having returned to the hotel, we changed and then went back to Chinatown for dinner.
All in all - a typical tourist day.
