USA 2017

Today got off to an awful start. The town we are staying in - Tusayan - is so poorly served with restaurants that we had to go to McDonalds for breakfast. I hate McDonalds. Cheap and very nasty. Although actually we spent $30 on four Mcmuffins so actually it's not cheap but I'll stick with 'very nasty'. Having survived breakfast and a scare that Isabel had lost her camera (subsequently found under car seat), we set sail for Zion National Park via a couple of photo opportunities.

First major stop was at Horseshoe Bend - 'a horseshoe-shaped incised meander of the Colorado River'. We had a fifteen minute walk to get to the site and it was very hot. The view of the bend was spectacular - well so I was told. My fear of heights has grown over time. The drop to the river was such that I couldn't get anywhere near the edge. It was like an invisible wall was stopping me and so my photos showed either land and no river or parts of the river but no obvious horseshoe. Jo ignored the invisible wall, sat on the edge and presumably has photos showing a meandering horseshoe...we will see.

Next was the Lower Antelope valley and Ken's tours. Ken, who we did not meet, has found an area which contains caverns of rocks that have been sand blasted for squillions of years. Ken has a bizarre pricing structure - a $25 charge pp for the tour plus $8 pp for parking. Given the place is in the middle of nowhere I imagine few people rely on public transport. Hence why not just go for $33 instead. Anyway, the rock shapes and the patterns are amazing. To add to the effect the rocks reflect the sunlight with dramatic effect. The tour was not exactly under ground as you could see the sky but we were led along a corridor. The photos when I learn to upload them will speak for themselves. Each of us believe we have taken the best picture ever - I'm the only one who has!

Finally a quick 100 mile sprint to Zion National Park where we will be staying for the next three days. I didn't even have space to mention the drive from the Grand Canyon to Page. It was like a scene from Game of Thrones - really awe inspiring.

Top Tip - This goes to Ken - perhaps show up for work and sort out your pricing. Perhaps tarmac the car park to justify the existing pricing structure!
