Janiculum Hill is a very complex hill with a lot of history on top of it. It is one of the famous seven hills of Rome. On top of the hill is a statue for an Italian revolutionary named Giuseppe Garibaldi. He was an Italian who was confused as a foreigner because of his darker skin and because he married a South American woman. He lead his army to Janiculum Hill to claim Italy as his own. He helped Italy “become” Italy around the 1870s. Giuseppe and his army help find the Kingdom of Italy. That is why he’s also known as “the sword” or “the father of the mainland.” The name of the event Gisepi lead was called “ Risorgimento.” In english this translates into “resurgence/reorganization.” Another cool place on the Janiculum Hill is the Tempietto. It was built in 1502 AD by Donato Bramante. The temple is right next to the San Pietro in Montorio. The temple is supposedly in the exact place where St. Peter was crucified. The neat thing about the Tempietto is the design of how small it is. This makes sense because Tempietto in english is “small temple.” The last cool place on the hill is called the Sovereign Military Order of Malta Headquarters. There is not a lot of info on this building except that it is the headquarters of where the original Crusaders are. The Crusaders now just donate to charities now. You can also look through a keyhole and see a clear view to St. Peter’s Church.
