The story behind the Laocoön and His Sons sculpture is surrounded around the Trojan Horse. The story is that the Greeks built a large and hollow horse to give to the Trojans during the war. The Trojans did not know the horse would be filled with Greek soldiers, ready to take over Troy and eventually winning the war. Except one Trojan knew this gift was a little too friendly. The Trojan was a priest with two sons named Laocoön. He tried to tell his fellow Trojans that the horse seemed like a trap but no one listened to him. The Greeks found out about Laocoön and sent Poseidon to him to kill him and his two sons with sea creatures and serpents. The scene of the killing is the statue being portrayed. The original statue was in Nero's palace. It was then excavated around 1506 when Nero's palace was rediscovered. There is an interesting story with Laocoön's missing right arm. Many artist thought the arm was in a bizarre position. It wasn't until an archeologists was walking around a sculpture shop when he found the missing arm. This happened during the 1990's. The sculpture has been a big influence to artist in the Baroque period.
